What is a Projector?

A projector is a device that produces an image from an input. That input can be a smartphone, a laptop or a computer. The output will be on a wall or a flat surface.

Different types of Projectors:

1. DLP Projectors

Digital Light Processing (DLP) refers to how the projector creates images via a color wheel.

They render video better than LCD projectors, especially when shown from Blu-ray. If you want a projector to watch movies in theater-quality, then you would want to look at DLP projectors.

DLP Projectors are more portable and weigh less than LCD projectors.

2. LCD Projectors

LCD stands for liquid crystal display. This type of projector delivers more color dynamics than the DLP projector and uses less energy with less ghosting of images.

If you are looking for a general multi-purpose projector rather than top-notch image quality, then an LCD projector would be your go-to option.

Buying guide for choosing a projector in India

Factors which you need to take into account while buying a projector:

1. Throw Distance

The most important info of a projector is the throw ratio. It is the distance between the wall and the projector divided by the width of the projector’s output.

If the screen width is 10 feet and the projector-to-screen distance is 15 feet, then the required throw ratio should be 1.5:1.

That is why the first step in selecting a projector is finding out how wide the screen of the projector is and how far can the projector be placed from the screen.

If you measure the place where you are going to set up the projector, you will get a rough idea about which projectors to go for.

A simple rule to follow is that the closer the projector is to the screen wall, the clearer the image will be.

2. Screen Size

If you are starting from scratch and do not know which screen size to get, a simple rule of thumb to follow is to divide by 5 the distance of the farthest viewer position that you want in your room.

So if the last viewing person is going to be sitting 50 feet from the screen, you need a screen that is 10 feet high (50 / 5).

If you don’t know the distance of the farthest possible viewer, it is ok. This is just for a rough approximation. But it is better to have some sort of distance in your mind while picking out a projector.

3. Brightness

Brightness is one of the most important characteristics of projectors. You need to get this right because if the image is not bright enough, you won’t really enjoy the experience of a projector.

Projector brightness is measured in lumens. To calculate how many lumens you need, here is a simple ballpark example:

  • A living room where the lights can be turned off completely: 1500 to 2000 lumens
  • A school classroom or boardroom where the lights can be dimmed, if not fully extinguished: at least 3000 lumens
  • A lecture hall, church, or other larger venue, or an environment with high ambient light: at least 4500 lumens
  • A movie theatre or stadium: 20,000 lumens or more

4. Resolution

Most projectors these days are 1024 x 768 with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Some high definition projectors would be around 1280 x 800. At the very least, we would recommend not going lower than the standard 1024 x 768 resolution.

5. Contrast ratio

You should not really care about this specification. This is more of a TV thing.

6. Connectivity

HDMI is the standard connection used these days. However, existing audio-video systems might have only VGA connectivity ports, so you need to look for projectors that are compatible with VGA if that is the case or get a VGA-to-HDMI converter.

A tip: do not go for HDMI cables longer than 25 feet.

7. Sound

Most projectors aren’t built for great sound. Therefore, if the sound is very important to you, consider buying a separate audio system to connect to the projector.

If you do need an all-in-one situation, get a projector which has at least 10-watt sound output.

8. Brands

A lot of Indian brands that are basically imported from China and re-labeled in India are listed on Amazon. We would recommend avoiding those brands.

Popular brands according to us in projectors are:

  • BenQ
  • Sony
  • Epson
  • Hitachi
  • Toshiba
  • Cannon
  • Panasonic
  • LG

What are the advantages of having a projector at home?

  1. You can watch a movie in a theatre setting in the peace and privacy of your home with family.
  2. You can watch movies without cuts.
  3. You can watch more movies available on streaming services like Netflix, Prime, and Hotstar.
  4. You can catch your sports in the best possible resolution.
  5. Projectors are very easy to install and are portable. You can take them to your friends’ house or to your office and have a screening with relative ease.
  6. The cost of the projector is less when comparing to a similar-sized TV with the same output.
