Last Updated on March 9, 2020

Are you tearing your hair out currently trying to find the best phone in your budget? Tired of looking at multiple review websites/rankings to zero in on your choice? Don’t worry, we got you covered.

Factors in Deciding the Best Phone in Every Budget

We rank phones in a certain way which gives the maximum features in accordance with the price you pay.

  1. Price: Now this is the first thing we would ask you to consider. Have a set budget in mind. Phones come in all prices and each price higher price bracket of phones have some advantage over the lower price bracket ones.
  2. Battery: We think long battery life is one of the most important features of a phone. A phone should last you comfortably throughout the day in 2019. It is non-negotiable.
  3. User Experience (Software, processor): Often, you come across a phone with the best specs in the world yet when you use it for a while (say 6 months), you see it starts to stutter and apps behave weirdly and are laggy. iPhones have excelled at smooth performance over a life cycle of a phone over android phones.
  4. Camera: From Prime Ministers to Tik Tok users, everybody wants to capture good quality photos and videos and camera have become the battleground for many companies to make their phones stand apart from the competition.
  5. Display Quality: In higher-priced phones, you will start seeing OLED screens on displays which are more bright and colourful than the LCD screens in lower-priced phones. And this year, some phones have come out with a 90-hertz refresh rate display which has upped the game even further.
  6. After-sales Service: Service is incredibly important in India and hence, the better the after-sales service network of the company, the more of a headache-free experience you will have if something goes wrong with your phone.

We sort of cheated here since the Redmi 7A is slightly over above Rs. 5000 but you will get the best value if you can stretch your budget just a bit.

It is a compact phone with a plastic body in a matte finish. Even though it has got large bezels, the design is decent and pleasing on the eye. It has got a 5.45 inch IPS display which has a bit of an issue with legibility in sunlight.

It sports the Snapdragon 439 processor and provides decent performance considering the price. The camera is 12 MP on the back and 5 MP on the front and will take clean photos but don’t expect anything above average in low light conditions.

The main good thing about this phone is its battery life. It can last for about 1.5 days on average use thanks to its 4000 mAh battery.

The Redmi 7A ticks all the right boxes for what you want in a budget phone. It will work well with most apps and the value provided is unparalleled in this price range.

The first thing you will notice about the Realme 3 Pro is the design. It is the best-looking phone in this price range. It has an in-screen fingerprint sensor which is quite fast.

The Realme 3 Pro has a 6.3-inch IPS display panel with minimal bezels and a teardrop notch design. The screen performs well on all parameters. Although it can’t be compared to OLED displays or anything, it still does a decent job.

A great thing about the Realme 3 Pro and which tipped it for our choice of the phone under Rs. 10000 is the lack of presence of any ads in the software.

The Realme 3 Pro performs great thanks to the best-in-class processor, the Snapdragon 710. This phone can play all games like PUBG.

The camera on this phone is a beast. It has a Sony IMX519 sensor, the same one carried by premium phones like the OnePlus 6T. The phone takes really good photos, it is hard to believe that a phone in this price range can perform this well in the camera department. Although, we were not really impressed with the video recording capabilities of the phone.

The phone has a 2-day battery life on average use with fast-charging support. A disappointing design feature is the old micro-USB port on the phone but we can’t everything we want at this price. At least not yet.

The Realme 3 Pro beats the competition in this price bracket by miles and we would not hesitate to say this is one of the best phones to come out in this price bracket.

  • Front camera – 20 MP, f/2.0

The successor to the wildly popular Redmi Note 7 Pro, the Redmi Note 8 Pro does everything well and more. With the Gorilla glass front and back, it is a neatly designed package with the teardrop notch design. We don’t really like any of the colour options other than black.

The display is 6.53-inches and supports HDR which you won’t find in any other phone.

The software is easy to use and people will be familiar if they have used other Xiaomi phones. We still do not like the idea of ads but guess it’s an acceptable trade-off.

It is powered by the Helios G90T which is comparable to last year’s flagship processor, Snapdragon 845.

Now the camera is the part where the Redmi Note 8 Pro really shines and makes it the best in the category. It has a quad-camera setup in the back with the main camera at 64 MP plus and 8 MP ultrawide lens with the selfie camera taking photos at 20 MP.

Though the ultrawide photos are not that great, this camera is the best on any phone under Rs. 20000 in India.

The audio is ok in headphones and very weak when listening to on speakers. The battery life is superb and class-leading. It lasts comfortably for 2 days thanks to its 4500 mAh battery size with fast charging up to 18W.

This is an all-rounder and a fantastic value buy for the price you pay.

The Redmi Note 8 Pro is so good that we think it presents the best value in the whole Rs. 10,000 to 20,000 price range thanks to its excellent camera and long battery life. We would buy a higher RAM/Storage version if our budget is above Rs. 15000 but below Rs. 20000.

The K20 Pro has an amazing design with a notch-less display screen. The back of the phone has a gradient pattern which we are not too fond of but some people may like it.

The K20 Pro has a 6.39-inch Super AMOLED display which is amazing to look at. The software and user experience though we still detest the presence of ads.

It sports the Snapdragon 855 chipset which is the fastest chipset used in Android phones and performance is as good as to be expected.

The triple camera at the back is very good with an ultrawide lens that produces good results. The selfie camera is a 20 MP pop-up camera which takes good shots even in portrait mode. Overall, the camera is better than Oneplus 7 and Asus 6Z.

The K20 Pro has a single speaker which is really loud and it still has a 3.5 mm headphone jack making it a very rare sight.

The battery lasts a full day easily even with the AMOLED display and to top it off, it has fast charging support of up to 27 W.

The K20 Pro is an Rs. 50000 phone priced under Rs. 3000. It has drawbacks like the ads and a few software kinks which Xiaomi tries to solve through updates but it is absolutely the best value out there.

The OnePlus 7T is our choice for the best phone under Rs. 40000. It has a minimalistic and stylistic design with frosted glass at the back. The notch on the display is just a teardrop and looks hardly noticeable. Though we really don’t like the look of the camera bump at the back.

The OnePlus 7T sports a 90-hertz AMOLED display and it is the best screen on any smartphone right now. It runs on Snapdragon 855+, known to be 15% faster than the Snapdragon 855 chip.

The camera is decent though it falls behind some phones like the Samsung S10e but they are at a higher price range. The audio set up on the phone is surprisingly loud and full, better than almost any phone we had.

The OnePlus 7T has a full day of battery life in it and is the best flagship phone you can carry with a price tag of under Rs. 40000 although there are phones like the K20 Pro which do everything the OnePlus 7T does at a lesser price.

Now, we are going to be controversial here and recommend the iPhone XR over the latest Android phones but it is with good reason. We have found through experience that iPhones usually last longer and have a better user experience in terms of apps and upgrades.

Plus, the iPhone XR boasts an excellent battery and will continue to receive Apple updates in the future. It comes in 5 different colours and they all look good.

A big drawback is the LCD screen but it works for people who aren’t really that bothered. Otherwise, the phone works well in terms of camera performance, battery life and longevity.

If you do not want an Apple device, then the OnePlus 7 Pro is the phone for you if you have a budget of Rs. 50,000.

It has great build and design, an amazing 90-hertz refresh rate AMOLED display screen and a superfast in-screen fingerprint reader. It has the best screen on any smartphone at the moment.

The OnePlus 7 Pro has excellent speakers Dolby Atmos but it does not have a headphone jack which is really a bummer.

The battery life is decent and you will get a full day use out of it. It has fast charging support where you can charge your phone to 42% within 15 minutes of charging.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is an all-rounder but in our opinion iPhones offer more smoothness in terms of camera performance and in-app user experience.
