Apple came out with AirPods 2.0 in March of 2019. They build upon the previous version and have certain enhancements like battery life and marginally improved sound and connectivity.
And the Apple AirPods cost Rs. 14,900/-. Let’s get that out of the way. That is a lot of cash for a pair of headphones. But people often make the mistake of comparing the AirPods with the headphones of a similar price range. And people compare the AirPods with other headphones with the usual parameters such as sound, clarity and noise cancellation. But that is not the correct way to go about it when deciding about the Apple AirPods.
The AirPods are not just headphones. They are a packaged wireless experience designed in a way to offer seamless connectivity to your phone. That’s why the Airpods are worth it.
The AirPods is not for audiophiles. It is not for people who want noise-cancellation. But, they are perfect for casual listeners of music and podcasts. They sound better than the regular wired Apple Earppods and pack a punch in terms of bass. For calls, the sound is very clear and better than when you talk with the speaker of the phone.
A great feature is that if you are listening to music and take one Airpod out, the music pauses automatically and when you put it back again on the ear, it resumes again. Very convenient.
Comfort & Fit
I don’t know about you but apart from the overhead cup headphone style, I hadn’t been able to find any earbuds or headphones to fit into my ear comfortably… till Apple came out with the earpods. The Airpods have the same design and it fits my ears like a glove and doesn’t go into my ear canal like most earbuds. They don’t fall off while running or working out. You will be taken aback by the overall experience of wearing something so minimal and yet having no chords or cable.
The one major drawback is the way they look. From an angle, it does like a prop from an Alien movie but I think the drawback is very minute compared to the overall device.
Calls & Connectivity
This is the feature of the Airpods and why they are priced the way they are. Once you pair them with your iPhone or Android phone via Bluetooth, you don’t need to pair it again. Ever. As soon as you open the case, the Airpods connect with your phone instantly. This is a very underrated feature and one that removes a lot of friction in your life.
For picking up calls, all you need to do is tap one AirPod twice and just like that you can start talking. It’s so friction-less that I think in a few years time this will become the norm. The mic is crystal clear thanks to Apple’s clever noise-cancelling tech that uses subtle vibrations to know you’re speaking. You can talk to Siri easily and you don’t need to hold the phone close to your mouth to yell through the phone.
Battery & Range
The Airpods advertised battery is of about 5 hours continuous use and usually works for more than that time. You have to charge the case which charges the Airpods when they are kept in it. Again, the experience is very smooth as you don’t really feel they are ever out of charge since you will usually put them in the case after 1 or 2 hours of usage.
The range is great. You can keep your phone in one room and go to another corner of a mid-sized apartment and it will still work.
The Apple Airpods cost Rs. 14,900 and they are worth every rupee… if you value the convenience they offer. There are better headphones which have a superior sound and fit but no device offers such a seamless experience with your phone. It may sound fanboyish but the Airpods are probably the best device Apple has made after the iPhone.
