We scouted the web and tried to find out the best fitness tracker in India currently.

What Fitness Tracker should I buy?

  1. Figuring out what you want to track – calories, heart-rate, steps, sleep:
Do you want a tracker just for the basics? Like steps, heart rate and sleep? Then you do not need to spend upwards of Rs. 3000 on a fitness tracker in India. Do you want GPS along with a music player with calls, text and social media notifications? Then you should spend more than Rs. 10,000 to get your fit right.
  2. The reliability of it’s tracking:
Reliability of trackers varies between the different price range of trackers. Higher priced tend to be more accurate. If you just want to a basic check on your heart rate, then you don’t really need to go beyond the Mi Band 3 or the Honor Band 4.
  3. The durability of the band and the conditions you want to use it in:

Cons
  • Heart-rate tracking is not accurate
  • Brightness is low when outside in sunlight
  • Sleep tracking is not very accurate either

At a price tag of Rs. 1,999, the Mi Band 3 is one of the best value for money fitness trackers out there. It lets you track activities like running, walking, climbing stairs, cycling and sleep.

The Mi Band 3 comes with a 0.78-inch OLED screen with a resolution of 128 x 80 pixels with an embedded touch button under the glass. The touch button allows you to ignore calls on phones if they are busy.

You can also read messages on it. It shows a three-day weather forecast and is water-resistant up to 50 m, so you can go swimming with the band.

Among other features, it has a stopwatch, find your phone, alarms, heart-rate monitor, tracking for speed and sleep. You get all of this with a battery life which lasts up to 20 days.

We found that the Mi band 3 lacks brightness when outside, you will have trouble reading messages in sunlight but you can see the number of steps or km walked.

You can connect with almost all types of phones – Android or iOS and it will work well with them. You just have to download MiFit App on your phone available in Playstore and the App Store.

Though it has a heart-rate detector, it is not accurate at times. It might jump around from time to time even if there is no activity.

Other than these flaws, this is the best fitness tracker in India under Rs. 2000. No other band comes close to the features and the price. If you just want to see the utility of a fitness tracker before investing in an expensive one, go for this.

Honor Band 4

  • Colourful screen
  • Good battery life
Cons
  • Heart-rate tracking is not 100% accurate

Features:

The Honor Band 4 is a great piece of hardware for fitness enthusiasts. The band’s build quality is good and it has a watch-like strap buckle, unlike other fitness trackers. It looks more premium than the Mi Band 3.

The screen is colourful and bright but it does not have auto-brightness adjustment which is a bummer since you need to go into the settings and alter the brightness.

There are three types of faces on the watch:

The band offers 24×7 heart-rate tracking which you can see in a graph in the Huawei Health app which you can download on both Android and iOS devices. The tracker is more responsive than the Mi Band 3. It is a casual way to monitor heart-rates, we do not expect precision at this price level.

It does not have GPS in it but the GPS is tracked through your phone if you connect it. So if you run with your phone, you can get a map of your runs.

The band has features like alarms, find your phone, notifications and sleep tracking. It has a battery which can last up to 20 days in dormant mode but if you use it with the heart-rate sensor and sleep tracker, it will last you up to 7 days on a full charge.

You will not really enjoy reading messages and notifications on the phone, rather you will use it to see if the message is worth picking your phone up.

This is probably the best fitness tracker for the price and it is better than the Mi Band 3.

It is available in three colours – black, mauve and white. It has a very light wrist band and the tracker is lightweight too. Setting up through the Fitbit app is a breeze.

The Fitbit Inspire HR tracks sleep, heart-rate, steps and calories burned. You can get smartphone notifications on it like text, calls and social media notifications though you cannot respond to any of the notifications.

We tracked our sleepover a week and it gave information like what kind of sleep we had along with an overall sleep score. It is water-resistant up to 50 metres, so you can take it for a swim.

This would have been our pick for most people but it is double the price of the Mi Band 4 and only a 4-day battery life which we can’t really justify. It is the perfect band for people who are Fitbit fans and want something within Rs. 5000.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do Fitness Trackers work?

Fitness trackers have a lot of sensors installed in them. They range from Accelerometers to GPS devices to optic heart-rate monitors. These sensors help to track each parameter respectively.

How Fitness Trackers measure heart rate?

The heart rate monitor inside the tracker shines a light through the skin and examines the light that bounces back. Fluctuations in light level can be translated into heart rate since blood absorbs more light.

How Fitness Trackers track sleep?

Fitness trackers rely on Actigraphy to track sleep. The tracker is on your wrist and it tracks your hand movements throughout the night. That data is fed into the tracker’s software and the results are then interpreted.

How Fitness Trackers track steps?

One such tracker is the Accelerometer which is also the most common one. It is used for counting steps by measuring acceleration force and orientation. It determines whether the device is horizontal or vertical and is moving or not.

What is the difference between a Fitness Tracker and a Smart Watch?

The lines are almost blurred between Fitness Trackers and Smart Watches since most fitness trackers tell the time and smartwatches track all that can be tracked by fitness trackers.

The question is now more or less about aesthetics. Do you want to wear a dedicated device to track your activity? Or do you want a watch that can also track your activity?

Smartwatches like Fossil Smartwatch and Apple watch can be worn in all kinds of settings, whereas a Mi Band 3 or a Garmin Instinct would look out of place with a suit.
