Buying Guide for 4K TVs in India
What is a 4K TV?
4K TVs (also called Utra-HD TVs) are TVs that offer more pixels than the regular HD-TVs you get, specifically 3840×2160 pixels in the 4K TVs compared to the 1920×1080 pixels in HDTVs. Is it worth spending the extra money for it? Not really, unless you are getting a big one (above 40 inches) or your TV position is really close to your viewing area.
What are the factors to look for in choosing a 4K TV?
The primary factors in selecting a 4K TV are:
1. Display type
There are three types of displays currently in the market – LED, QLED and OLED. This is besides the older technology of Plasmas and LCDs which are outdated and most manufacturers have stopped producing TVs with these display types.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) TVs are the most widely available TVs today. They are slimmer than LCDs and cheaper than QLED and OLED TVs. They are cost and energy efficient and hence, are the standard display types today.
QLED (Quantum Light Emitting Diode) is a display made popular by Samsung. It is a newer type of display which is slightly cheaper than OLED and a lot more expensive than LED. This technology uses quantum dots to produce light which is brighter and more colourful than emitted by LED.
OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) TVs are the newest and most expensive TV displays out there. The technology uses individual pixels that emit light allowing to turn of blacks when the video demands providing a very rich contrast.
A comparison between the different display types of TVs are:
LED | QLED | OLED | |
Thickness | Thin | Thin | Thinnest |
Colors | Good | Great | Best |
Viewing Angles | Average | Great | Great |
Light | Back-lit LED | LEDs with Quantum dots | Individually lit pixels |
Price for 55 inch TVs | ~Rs. 45,000 | ~Rs. 1,50,000 | ~Rs. 1,50,000 |
2. Resolution
Resolution is the number of pixels on the screen. The more pixels packed in, the better and sharper the image. Standard resolutions for TVs today are HD ready (720p), Full HD (1080p) and 4K or UHD (2160p).
4K provides the best viewing experience but we recommend 4K TVs only if you are getting 49 inches and above looking at the current state of the market and the content available in terms of value.
3. Refresh Rate
Refresh rate means the number of times the image is changed on screen. A TVs refresh rate becomes really important when you watch
4. HDR/Contrast
Contrast means the difference between the difference in depth between white and black on the screen. Higher contrast is great for dark movie scenes and provides a richer viewing experience.
HDR or High-Definition Range shows a more dynamic range of colours and the difference between the deep blacks and the other colours. It is a new certification.
Within HDR, there are two standards – HDR10 and Dolby Vision. Nothing else. Companies which advertise as “HDR-Ready” or “HDR-Pro” are just using it as a marketing gimmick. For now, all you need to know is that most HDR content is produced keeping HDR10 in mind and Dolby Vision is not that major of an upgrade.
What is the difference between Low, Mid and High Budget TVs?
The difference is mainly in display panels. Low budget TVs have mediocre display panels whereas the mid-budget TVs have better ones. The high budget ones have QLED or OLED panels and are far superior and more expensive.
Are Speakers Important?
Sound is measured in Watts. The higher the Watts, the better the sound is supposed to be. Speakers are important in TVs but we have some news – they all suck.
You should not buy a TV going by the sound of its speakers. We suggest having speakers or a soundbar attached to your 4K TV to give you a more immersive experience.
When is the best time to buy 4K TVs in India?
Usually, the best deals happen during Diwali season. That has been the case for the last 5-6 years.
Are 4K TVs with OLED backlight worth it?
Well, no. Not in India that is. OLED TVs are imported in India and that is why their price is almost always upwards of Rs. 1.5 lakhs. Though the colours are richer than LED lighting, the blacks are deeper and OLED TVs consumer less electricity than LEDs, we still can’t fathom paying that much for a slightly more-than-modest improvement in picture quality.
What size of 4K TV to buy?
As a thumb rule, do not buy a 4K TV with a size of fewer than 49 inches. If you only have space (or the budget) for a smaller TV, then it’s better to save up on cash and go for a good Full-HD TV. You will get better value out of the purchase as you won’t even see much difference between a 1080p and a 4K picture quality in that screen size. For a more precise way of deciding, measure the distance between your sitting position and the TV and then refer to this table:
Viewing Distance (in ft) | Screen Size (inches) | Resolution |
3-6 ft | 24″ | HD Ready |
4-8 ft | 32″ | HD Ready |
5-10 ft | 40-43″ | Full HD |
6-12 ft | 49″ | Full HD |
8-13 ft | 55″ | Full HD or 4K |
8-15 ft or above | 65″ | 4K |
What is the main difference between the low budget and high budget picks?
It is HDR, that is High Dynamic Range. That is the real difference. While a 4K TV technically means you get more pixels on your screen, a HDR TV can do more with those pixels. Basically, HDR enables TVs to display a greater difference between blacks and other colors, giving you a richer picture.
Any brands that should be preferred over others?
Service is an incredible pain in the ass in India and because of that, we advise you to only look for TVs which have a service centre in your city. Also, as a rule of thumb, if you have a high budget (Rs. 60,000+), we recommend only Sony, Panasonic, LG and Samsung models
We find their display panels and service coverage beats affordable brands like TCL or Xiaomi. However, Xiaomi is the best pick amongst the affordable options.
Where to get 4K content in India?
Netflix and Amazon Prime are the only streaming services that offer content in 4K. You can purchase the Amazon 4K Fire TV Stick and stream 4K content from Amazon, Netflix and even browse 4K videos on YouTube.
